Fall Gets Curiouser

Tue Sep 15, 2009, 2:52 PM
The weather still feels like summer to me. The part of me that responds to the seasons has apparently decided that fall is approaching.

I've been modifying print photos and advertisements featuring people, originally to get a better idea of how to draw the human figure. I've been calling the result a "Redraw," meaning I simply drew what I saw there. In some cases, I saw things a little differently than the literal. Finally, creativity took over and turned a perfectly ordinary page with a great deal of white space into a whole other object.

The figures were begging to have some bright colors around, so I obliged them. Those bright colors seemed lonely next to the big white page, so I color washed the rest of the page as well. Then all those fuzzy colors blending into one another seemed to want some outlining. The outlining wanted to be broken up by abstract doodles. And the doodles wanted some additional background to play with.

I'm pretty sure the picture is happy with itself now. I have absolutely no idea where to go after this. I also don't know what to call this hybrid between a Redraw and the more original art of last winter. Is it even a collage? Hrm.

If you take my work as a whole, what you're viewing is
- a growing body of small scale art
- made with common tools available in office supply stores
- infused with fantastical, sometimes semi-abstract themes
- only tangentially inspired by the "real world."

I'm happy to discuss the tools I use, the physical methods employed, where my ideas came from, and what (if anything) is meant by any individual work of my art. Conversations I've had in the past with interested parties have led to additional artworks. Such "answers" speak directly to the person who inspired them. As a warning, any visual "answer" may also be in the form of another "question."

My art is where I "discuss" things that I find impossible to express with formal language. I've had no art training and have very little in the way of material resources. I also have deeply mixed feelings about taking too seriously a hobby that has been a source of calm in a chaotic world. For these reasons, I'm very unlikely to be insulted by anything one might say. I encourage dialogue for the purely selfish reason that I find it inspirational.

Never be afraid to try something new. Remember that a lone amateur built the Ark.
And a large group of professionals built the Titanic.

Isn't it amazing how a broken computer can affect productivity? Sometimes it's a blessing in disguise. But I'm glad to have you back. ;)

So true. Working on my art wasn't exactly my first thought during the whole computer rebuilding process. I suppose I should get back to it though.

Somewhere around here I have an old sketchpad I never scanned in... Two, actually.
